Allama Iqbal Open University

Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) was established in May 1974 with its main campus at Islamabad while the regional offices are spread all over the country. It is one of the oldest distance learning universities providing lowest cost education open for everybody residing in Pakistan (whether they are Pakistani citizens or foreigners residing in Pakistan). It aims to provide continuing education to job holders and those who cannot leave their homes via its distance learning programs, thus targeting the remote areas of the country in spreading education.

How distance education emerged?

Distance education emerged with the idea of British PM Mr. Harold Wilson who was of the view to provide educational opportunities to those who have been barred from continuing their education due to early entrance into the job. Therefore the first open university of the world known as the UK Open University was established in his premiership during the late 60s. A great number of job-holders were attracted to this new scheme of education, and were able to polish their skills and improve their qualifications. Thereby the idea of open universities to promote distance education spread the world-over, eventually in 1974 arriving in Pakistan too.
